The First European Ecumenical Assembly took place in Basel from 15 to 21 May 1989 as part of the conciliar process for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation of WCC. It was organized by the Conference of European Churches CEC and the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE). The theme of the Assembly was: “Peace with Justice”. The final document of the Assembly was of great importance for the further development of ecumenism in Europe. Many participants from Eastern Europe were allowed to participate. The three-country walk that led through Germany, France and Switzerland and the experience of open borders marked everybody, just a few months before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
