The Sermon

A key element of Reformed worship

Since the Reformation, the sermon has been at the center of the church’s mission, being the public proclamation of God’s word. It is usually given by a pastor, who is responsible for the respective parish or has been invited as a guest. The sermon arises from the theological-intellectual and personal-existential interaction with the biblical word. It is human speech in the service of God’s word, and is possible only through his Spirit. The sermon is intended to address listeners in their respective life situations by interpreting the Holy Scriptures in today’s context. A good sermon edifies, strengthens, comforts and directs those who listen to God’s word.
