The new PCS Council welcomed visitors from Syria and Romania to its constituent session

The Council of the Protestant Church in Switzerland (PCS) has elected its Vice Presidents and assigned new council members to different departments. In addition to its first orders of business, the Council placed its focus on church cooperation at geopolitical hotspots, welcoming Rev. Mathilde Sabbagh from Syria and Rev. József Kiss from Romania.

Rebecca Mutumosi Mfutila receives the International Sylvia-Michel-Prize of 2022

Since 2009, the International Sylvia-Michel-Prize has supported people and projects that promote women’s leadership in Reformed churches throughout the world. In 2022, the prize will go to a pioneering woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo – Rebecca Mutumosi Mfutila. The prize was awarded for the first time at a synod of the Protestant Church in Switzerland (PCS).

PCS Presidium receives two high-ranking representatives of the Protestant churches from Syria and Lebanon

Syria and Lebanon must not be forgotten! Rita Famos, President of the PCS, and Daniel Reuter, Vice-President and member of the Board of Trustees of Swiss Church Aid (HEKS), welcomed Pastor Haroutune Selimian from Aleppo (Syria) and Pastor Riad Jarjour from Beirut (Lebanon) in Bern on 3 December.

Ecumenism meets diplomacy: Foreign Minister Cassis and Cardinal Secretary of State Parolin visit the PCS Synod

Extraordinary visit: at the autumn Synod of the Protestant Church in Switzerland today, the highest body of the Reformed church met with Federal Councilor Cassis and the Vatican’s Cardinal Secretary of State Parolin. In their greetings, both the host and guests emphasized the importance of dialogue.

The Council, as the leading body, of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe CPCE received the resignation of Executive President Gottfried Locher during its session conducted via video conference on 26 June 2020. Dr John Bradbury (United Reformed Church, London) has been entrusted with the interim executive management.

Tragedy in the Mediterranean – PCS Council supports civilian sea rescue operations

From a Christian perspective, the images of people who flee war, poverty and climate change by crossing the Mediterranean and who encounter distress at sea, call for love and mercy. This is why the Council of the Protestant Church in Switzerland PCS backs sea rescue operations and decided to support the «United4Rescue» alliance, which was co-founded by the Evangelical Church in Germany EKD.

Urgent Call for Donations to aid Church Cooperation in Syria

“If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Cor 12:26) Since Turkish troops marched into neighboring Syria in early October, tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. The HEKS/EPER partner churches in Syria are working in particular to help children in this dire situation. The Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches stands in solidarity with the endangered Christians of the region.

Japan meets Zwingli “A journey of discovery to another Reformation”

Meeting, discovering, and experiencing the Reformation: from 29 April to 6 May, a delegation of the National Christian Council in Japan NCCJ will travel to Switzerland to learn about the work of the Zurich reformer. On invitation of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches FSPC and the Reformed Church of Aargau, they will participate in this exciting “journey of discovery to another Reformation” together with the Evangelical Church in Germany EKD and the Association of Protestant Churches and Missions in Germany EMW.

Protestant Churches issue joint Statement of Peace for the first time

For the first time, the Protestant Churches in Europe have issued a joint “Statement of Peace.” Under the title of “Remembering Together,” they commemorate the end of the First World War 100 years ago and the heavy burden of its legacy. With this critical and self-critical retrospection, the churches want to contribute to building fair structures. “In the face of the devastating and lasting effects of the war, the Churches are well aware of the importance of acting to promote peace and prevent civil conflict,” states the document adopted by the 8th General Assembly of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe CPCE in Basel.
